What Kotobaya is

Kotobaya is a Japanese vocabulary study app for iPhone and Android. It offers a dictionary, kanji composition analysis, practice tasks, and a spaced-repetition review system.

What data Kotobaya collects

None. Kotobaya collects no personal data. In plain terms:

No accounts. You do not register, sign in, or provide an email address.
No analytics or advertising. Kotobaya contains no analytics SDKs, no ad networks, and no advertising identifiers (no IDFA/GAID usage). It does not use tracking pixels, fingerprinting, or behavioural profiling.
No third-party data sharing. Kotobaya makes no network requests in normal use. All dictionary data, practice content, and study progress are stored locally on your device, in the app's private storage.
No camera, microphone, contacts, photos, or location access.

Payments

Optional premium features are purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, whichever applies to your device. The app itself never processes, sees, or stores payment card data. The stores handle payment transactions under their own privacy policies:

Purchase receipts (product identifier, purchase date, expiry) are used solely to determine which features your purchase entitles you to, and are kept on your device.

Offline-first

Kotobaya is designed to work fully offline. Your study progress, collections, and notes never leave your device.

Text processing

The optional Importer feature sends the text you paste into it to a server for parsing. The processing is strictly transient:

The text is transmitted over an encrypted connection to a server located in the European Union, processed in memory, and the parsed result is returned to your device.
The server does not store, cache, log, or retain your text in any form. If a request fails, you simply send the text again.
The parsed document, with every word linked to the dictionary, is stored only on your device.
Your account is not linked to the text: the processing service receives the text and returns the result without any identifier tying it to you.

The full sentence library is also downloaded as a static file from servers located in the European Union. It contains only licensed sentence data, never your data.

Children

Kotobaya is suitable for all ages and does not collect any data from anyone, including children. The Importer transmits only the text you choose to paste; it is not automatic data collection.

Future: accounts and synchronisation (planned)

If and when Kotobaya adds optional accounts and cross-device synchronisation, this policy will be updated before that feature ships. Planned handling:

You would provide only an email address, and choose a password.
Study data would be stored encrypted on servers located in the European Union.
You would be able to delete your account and all associated data at any time, in the app and without contacting us.
You would have the right to access, correct, and erase your data, and to withdraw consent, under the GDPR.

Changes

We will update this policy if Kotobaya's data handling changes. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the latest version. Significant changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
